Sidama Coffee broke the hoodoo with their maiden win of the BetKing Ethiopian Premier League season when they brushed aside Wolkite Ketema 1-0 in round 5 fixture at the Addis Ababa Stadium. Talisman Dawit Tefera struck the only goal of the encounter in the first half to hand the Coffee makers a crucial three points.
Sidama Coffee came up with a sound plan to halt the build-up of Wolkite Ketema and it was successful in the first half. The visitors glued to their previous game line up with Abdulrahman Mubarak getting the nod ahead of Ahmed Hussein upfront. Wolkite came the closest to opening the scoring with a Firew Solomon free kick but Sidama keeper Mesay Ayano parried the ball out.
In the 18th minute Tefera forced a good save from Ethiopian international Jemal Tassew. Tefera gave Sidama Coffee the lead through a spot kick in the 37th minute. Mubarak could have scored the equalizer but Ayano was alert enough to send the ball over the cross bar.
It was another bit moment at the hour mark as Firew Solomon's powerful strike from distance was denied by Ayano who had relatively a positive outing. The home side could have killed the tie in the brink of fulltime when Esubalew picked out Habtamu Gezaghen with a through ball to score but the later failed to convert from close range as Sidama maintained their narrow lead to pick up their first maximum points of the season.
It is Wolkite Ketema's first defeat of the league season while Sidama Coffee's head coach Zerai Mulu gets a breathing space following a dreadful campaign opening start.
