Dozens detained over recent Ethiopia unrest

The temporary Command Post deployed by Ethiopia’s federal government to bolster security in the Southern Nations Nationalities and Peoples State said it is detaining dozens of people allegedly involved in the recent violence that occurred in the area.In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Command Post hailed the partnership between the residents and law enforcement officers over tip-offs and recovering of looted properties. Illegal weapons were also seized following security operations, including at checkpoints, the statement said. Relative peace and security has been restored in the region, it said, adding that if things continue this way, the duration of the Command Post won’t be longer. However, the Command Post would strengthen its operation until durable peace is restored in the region, it said. The Command Post prohibits activities that are against the law such as violations of human rights, unauthorized rally, and use of motorcycles  in the city of Hawassa. No c

Ethiopia is facing mounting tensions as an ethnic minority community demands secession

Ethiopia has 80 ethnic groups. More than two decades ago, the country adopted a constitution that uses ethnicity as a basis to organise the federation. But only five of the nine are home to a dominant ethnic community. The remaining four states are markedly multi-ethnic. Here the complications set in. While some numerically stronger ethnic communities have been denied the status of a state, some smaller ones have a state to call their own. For example, the State of Harari is home to the eponymous community of fewer than 200 000 people. On the other hand there are ethnic groups, like the Sidama—with more than three million people—that don’t have a state of their own. The Sidama people’s struggle to have their own state is at a point of no return. It has not always been like this. The Sidama have a history of distinct administrative existence dating back to  imperial days . More recently, the ethnically defined State of Sidama, in which the Sidama were the majority, was  esta

Ethiopia coffee, oilseeds export revenues hit $1.2bn

INTERNATIONAL – The Ethiopian government on Saturday said the country made more than $1.2 billion in revenue from the exports of coffee and oilseeds during the just-concluded Ethiopian fiscal year that ended on July 7.  The revenue was generated from the export of coffee, mung beans, white kidney beans, sesame seeds and soya beans, state-affiliated Fana Broadcasting Corporate (FBC) reported on Saturday.  Large amount of the export revenue was generated from the export of coffee. Ethiopia is one of Africa's largest producers of Arabica coffee, in which coffee production is dubbed as the backbone of the country's agriculture-led economy.  Read more here

Ethiopia: why the Sidama secession demand needs to be negotiated

Author: Yonatan Fessha  (MENAFN - The Conversation) Mounting tensions in southern Ethiopia arecreatinghigh levels of nervousness in the country. At the centre of the conflict is the clamour for internal secession by the Sidama, the country's fifth largest ethic group. Most recently, the federal government declared that it, rather than the local authorities, was nowin chargeof maintaining peace and security. This followed violence which had led to deaths and injuries. Ethiopia has 80 ethnic groups. The Hawassa City We Know and Love

July 29, 2019 ( -- The current insecurity and conflicts in Sidama zone of the Southern Ethiopian region has significantly affected investment, business, and tourism in the regional capital city of Hawassa. At the heart of the conflict is the quest for statehood by the Sidama ethnic groups, who have demanded a referendum to become an autonomous region. The conflict intensified over the last few weeks after some groups tried to declare Sidama as a region, claiming that the government failed to hold a referendum on a timeline stipulated in the constitution. As expected, the deadly clashes invited heavy military presence to the area. This week, in a meeting with the national trade steering committee, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed highlighted that foreign investors are leaving Hawassa as a result of the insecurity, which according to him is a significant economic setback for the region and for the nation. Many reports show that local investors are frustrated by the situation and

Ethiopia restores internet connection in restive southern region after 10 days blackout

ADDIS ABABA, July 29 (Xinhua) -- The Ethiopian government on Monday restored internet connection in the restive southern city of Hawassa after a 10 days outage. The Ethiopian government is yet to give a statement on the internet outage, but the outage started on July 18, soon after reports came of violent clashes between ethnic Sidama youths and security forces in Hawassa city, 275 km southeast of Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa. The ethnic Sidama youths were agitating for the creation of their own regional state, separate from the Southern regional state. The clashes left at least four people dead, with security forces arresting at least 150 individuals suspected of involvement in the violent clashes. Speaking to Xinhua, a resident of Hawassa city said mobile and WIFI internet connection has been restored in Hawassa city since Monday morning. "I have been able to use mobile and WIFI internet connection since Monday morning. I have also confirmed internet connecti

Ethiopian opposition groups accuse gov’t of democratic and human rights violations

Ethiopian opposition groups call for the government to stop the mass arrest and release those who are arrested with the pretext of attempted “coup d’etat” July 25, 2019 Ethiopian opposition parties have been sort of supporter of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s administration, or at least neutral, for most of the time since he took over the office in April 2018. That relationship is now ending and opposition parties are now acting like an opposition party rather than support group of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s administration. Seven opposition parties that are in the process of merging have issued a statement condemning the government for violation of democratic and human rights of citizens. Oromo Freedom Movement Party, Afar People’s Freedom Party, Afar People Justice, and Democratic Party, Ethiopian Democratic Union, Ethiopian National Unity Party, Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party, and All Ethiopian People Unity Party have jointly issued a statement condemning the mass

The Sidama Region and Ethiopia’s “Perfect Storm”

he last-minute compromise deal by the Sidama Liberation Movement and the Ethiopian government to delay the former’s planned declaration of a new regional state until an upcoming referendum in December doesn’t solve the deeper problem of the country’s contentious internal borders but instead means that this issue will play a leading role in the “perfect storm” that’s brewing ahead of next year’s general elections. *** Ethiopia narrowly averted its second possible collapse in less than as many months after the  last-minute compromise deal  between the Sidama Liberation Movement and the federal government, which followed the potentially existential crisis that was barely avoided after last month’s failed coup attempt in the Amhara Region. At that time, a radical nationalist figure tried to violently seize control of the country’s historic heartland in a bid to put a stop to PM Abiy’s far-reaching reforms, which could have plunged the East African nation of over 100 million peopl

Ethiopia Introduces New Electoral Law

July 24, 2019 ( -- The National Electoral Board of Ethiopia has introduced a new electoral law requring national political parties to have at least 10,000 registerd members to be eligible for the upcoming national elections planned to be held in May next year. Article 33 of the new electoral draft law, which was tabled for discussion at the national parliament on Wednesday, also stipulates that, except for ministers and government appointees, public servants running for parliamentary seats will be denied monthly salaries and benefits during the election process. The draft law faced strong resistance from representatives of poltical parties who claimed the law is designed to make government employees out of the election process and requested for amendments or cancilation of those articles. They said “although the articles are designed to encourage the formation of stronger political parties, they will also limit political participation and freedom of expression for m

Hundreds Flee Violence In Southern Ethiopia

More than 450 people in southern Ethiopia’s Sidama area who had fled their homes fearing violence are sheltering in a church, an official has told the BBC. The people seeking protection are residents of the town of Yirgalem, one of several places in the area in which people were killed last week in violence over a delayed referendum on whether a separate federal state of Sidama should be created. Tilahun Tafesse, who is head of security in Bore in neighbouring Oromia state, told the BBC that those seeking shelter were in his district.

Dozens dead in fight for independence in Ethiopia

Johannesburg – Hospital officials in Ethiopia’s southern Sidama region report that at least 25 people have been killed during clashes with Ethiopian security forces after activists launched their bid for independence. There are reports, however, that the death toll could be as high as 60, the BBC reported. Succession activists were killed when security forces opened fire on protesters across the Sidama region. The activists have declared their own federal state. The unilateral declaration of independence followed a deadline for the government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to respond to the request for a referendum on the matter expiring on Thursday. Four confirmed deaths were reported in the city of Hawassa, where the secessionists want to establish the capital of their future state, 26 others were also wounded in the city. During the clashes security forces were forced to evacuate 12 tourists after their lodge was attacked. Ethiopia comprises nine semi-autonom
