The temporary Command Post deployed by Ethiopia’s federal government to bolster security in the Southern Nations Nationalities and Peoples State said it is detaining dozens of people allegedly involved in the recent violence that occurred in the area.In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Command Post hailed the partnership between the residents and law enforcement officers over tip-offs and recovering of looted properties. INTERNATIONAL – The Ethiopian government on Saturday said the country made more than $1.2 billion in revenue from the exports of coffee and oilseeds during the just-concluded Ethiopian fiscal year that ended on July 7.  The revenue was generated from the export of coffee, mung beans, white kidney beans, sesame seeds and soya beans, state-affiliated Fana Broadcasting Corporate (FBC) reported on Saturday.  Large amount of the export revenue was generated from the export of coffee. The conflict intensified over the last few weeks after some groups tried to declare Sidama as a region, claiming that the government failed to hold a referendum on a timeline stipulated in the constitution. July 24, 2019 (Ezega.com) -- The National Electoral Board of Ethiopia has introduced a new electoral law requring national political parties to have at least 10,000 registerd members to be eligible for the upcoming national elections planned to be held in May next year. Article 33 of the new electoral draft law, which was tabled for discussion at the national parliament on Wednesday, also stipulates that, except for ministers and government appointees, public servants running for parliamentary seats will be denied monthly salaries and benefits during the election process. The draft law faced strong resistance from representatives of poltical parties who claimed the law is designed to make government employees out of the election process and requested for amendments or cancilation of those articles. More than 450 people in southern Ethiopia’s Sidama area who had fled their homes fearing violence are sheltering in a church, an official has told the BBC. The people seeking protection are residents of the town of Yirgalem, one of several places in the area in which people were killed last week in violence over a delayed referendum on whether a separate federal state of Sidama should be created. Johannesburg – Hospital officials in Ethiopia’s southern Sidama region report that at least 25 people have been killed during clashes with Ethiopian security forces after activists launched their bid for independence. There are reports, however, that the death toll could be as high as 60, the BBC reported. Succession activists were killed when security forces opened fire on protesters across the Sidama region. The activists have declared their own federal state. The unilateral declaration of independence followed a deadline for the government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to respond to the request for a referendum on the matter expiring on Thursday. Four confirmed deaths were reported in the city of Hawassa, where the secessionists want to establish the capital of their future state, 26 others were also wounded in the city.
