Coca-Cola plans to build a fifth plant in Hawassa

Coca-Cola  plans to invest $300 million to expand its business in Ethiopia in the next five years, as the East African nation opens up its economy to more foreign investors. The company, that started in Ethiopia six decades ago, will immediately spend $70 million to build a fourth plant in Sebeta, 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) outside the capital, Addis Ababa. The complex will have a capacity of 70,000 cases per day, Ethiopia’s European Union embassy said in a statement on its website, citing Coca-Cola East and Central Africa Franchise General Manager Bruno Pietracci. Coca-Cola plans to build a fifth plant in Hawassa in the south of the country, according to the statement. Source

Ethiopia's ethnic militias in the spotlight after failed coup

(Reuters) - A foiled coup in the Ethiopian state of Amhara that left five senior officials dead, including the army’s chief of staff, has thrust ethnic militias in one of Africa’s fastest-growing economies into the spotlight. The two attacks on Saturday night were led by Amhara’s head of state security General Asamnew Tsige, who had been openly recruiting fighters for ethnic militias in a state that has become a flashpoint for violence. Militias formed by ethnic groups are proliferating across Ethiopia, threatening sweeping political and economic reforms that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed kickstarted after he took power in the Horn of Africa country in April 2018. WHY ARE MILITIAS EMERGING? Ethiopia’s 100 million citizens come from dozens of ethnic groups with competing claims to land, resources and influence. The country’s federal government based in the capital Addis Ababa oversees nine ethnic-based regional states, which have autonomy over their revenues and security force

Assessment of Household Waste Management and Hygienic Practice in Yirgalem Town, Dale Woreda, Sidama Zone, South Nation Nationalities and Peoples of Region, Ethiopia

Abstract Currently rapid rate of urbanization and the increasing income of people leads to the generation of high quantities of waste. This makes final disposal of waste difficult. Since urbanization is faster in developing and migrate peoples to a new, modern way of life, an improved level of awareness, new skill and a learning process, the problem is more acute in developing countries. This study aims is to assess household waste management and hygienic practice. Community based cross sectional study was employed to assess the household waste management and hygienic practice among residents of Kidist mariam kebele of Yirgalem town. A total of 316 households were selected from 1, 115 households using systematic random sampling. Data was collected through interview and observation. The study discovered that majority of the households, (36%) disposed solid wastes through municipality and 95.7% of households had temporary storage means for solid waste. About 94.3% of the respondent

Ethiopia. Wasa: bread and symbol of life

In southern Ethiopia, among the Sidamo and other ethnic groups, wasa is the staple food-crop. It is a dark flour, obtained from a bulb plant called ‘wese’, or in the national language ‘ensete muse’, popularly known as ‘false banana’. The ‘ensete muse’ requires a portion of a rhizome to reproduce. The most common way to propagate this plant is with pieces of rhizomes called suckers. To propagate a false banana plant from a sucker, one must remove and replant the sucker. In three years the plant forms a false trunk, which can be two metres high, with leaves that can be 3 metres long and 70/80 centimeters large. From afar they can be mistaken for real banana plants, though the false banana has much larger leaves that grow lower compared to the real banana tree where leaves grow on top of the trunk. Only women are in charge of the wasa production. Obtaining this dark flour from false banana plants is not an easy task and men don’t have the necessary expertise. If his wife dies,

However, its seasonal trend has not been well studied in areas where nutrient-poor enset (false banana ( Ensete ventricosum )) foods are major staple. Moreover, there is scarcity of information on seasonal nature of anthropometric status of mother–child pairs (MCP) from the same areas in Southern Ethiopia. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the dietary diversity and anthropometric status of MCP in postharvest dry and lean wet seasons and identify factors associated with anthropometric status. Methods: The dietary intake and anthropometric data were collected from 578 households (578 mothers and 578 children) January–June 2017. T

Is the World's Next Missions Movement in Ethiopia?

Ethiopian churches no longer want to be on the receiving end of the Great Commission. A fter Italy invaded Ethiopia in 1935, Western missionaries fled or were forced to leave. Among them were the first two missionaries from Sudan Interior Mission (now SIM), who had planted a church in Sidama, a southern region known for growing coffee. They were attacked on the road and killed. After the Italian occupiers were expelled, SIM sent four more missionaries to Sidama; three were soon killed. Mourning their losses, Sidama congregations swore an unconventional oath: “We must avenge their deaths by sending out our own missionaries.” Despite persecution and turmoil, the churches began to do as they had promised. Agedachew Anebo said many of his fellow Christian leaders in Sidama, where the latest census found 4 in 5 people are now Protestants, still recall this story today. One denomination, the Ethiopian Kale Heywet (Word of Life) Church, now has more than 1,000 Sidama congregations s

Clément Chapillon and Fabien Fourcaud document the people and landscapes of Ethiopia’s Sidama

The Shade Promises written by  Marigold Warner Clément Chapillon and Fabien Fourcaud document the people and landscapes of Ethiopia’s Sidama Zone – the place where coffee was born, and where coffee could die Earlier this year, scientists found that  60 percent of the world’s 124 known species of coffee  are under threat of extinction. In Ethiopia, Africa’s largest exporter of the bean, deforestation is threatening a major source of the country’s income and the cultural traditions surrounding it. “Coffee is about connection,” says  Clément   Chapillon , who collaborated with fellow French photographer Fabien Fourcaud to create  The Shade Promises  –   a new body of work that documents life in the Sidama Zone of Ethiopia, where coffee is believed to have originated. In Sidama, coffee plays a central social and cultural role in the community. Three times a day, families and friends will gather for a coffee ceremony, usually led by the woman of the household. “If they don’t
